BALLERZ BLOG : Marketplace Game Theory
‘Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the house .. Not a BALLER was stirring, not even a mouse …”
The BALLERZ community was gifted an elite level gift from Santa. The much anticipated announcement of “wen marketplace” was answered to the tune of transfers kicking off, with Monday headlining the actual marketplace opening.
Unclench your jaw, sit back in your chair and relax before the big day .. the time has come and the real games begin.
We asked our followers what would move the price for them and traits/appearance took the crown. The thought process was traits make up the overall appearance so we grouped those together. Overall skills came in second with team and jersey/serial rounding it out.
Before we start … this is by no means financial advice. Let’s get into it.
The two most popular teams are the Chicago Squid and Toronto Spears with Seattle Scream and Michigan Colliders following close behind. I’d expect a premium for any BALLERZ from these teams and any on the floor will be swept.
Team Dapper and Flow are the most rare outside of customs and All-Stars. Will we see future utility for holding any of these? Only time will tell, but that spec might push the price a bit higher for these “special teams.”
Serial is not as important to me unless you got #1 or a #10000, especially considering the first 1000 BALLERZ were flow fest mystery pack pulls. Congrats though if you got a nice #23 serial or something else cool.
Jersey number to me can move the needle a bit more because this would translate to a doppelgänger BALLER (ex. #30 Steph Curry). However, it’s still tricky because you need the BALLER to resemble him which is no easy feat. We have plenty of real life hoopers in the community so I’m sure former numbers of yesteryear will be scooped up (relive those high school varsity and college moments!).
Skills are the elephant in the room. We know there’s a game coming. We know they matter … but how much is the question. Is a balanced BALLER with good skill on offense and defense more sought after than an unbalanced skill set with a very high specific stat? We’ll get a pretty good idea of skill tiers once MP opens and offers/sales start rolling.
In the real world, hoopers are usually categorized as offensive threats, defensive stoppers, ‘three and D’ guys and role players. Those elite ballers that can affect the game in multiple ways are what we call stars and superstars. The BALLERZ with skills similar to this star/superstar tier will be at a premium.
Sidebar .. can we call them Skillz moving forward?
Gold chains, gold grillz, cyborgs, aliens, lizards … oh my. The traits in BALLERZ cover a wide range and the scarcest will indeed be top tier in pricing. 3D glasses, an NFT staple, are present in the collection. I think my personal favorite are gold headphones for musical reasons. Expect the super rare traits to carry a premium (ex. different color skins, space visor).
Some wild card features that often get overlooked are captains, which feature a gold badge on the left shoulder and background color. Captains have been talked about and speculated on for future utility, but backgrounds have absolutely no following in the community. I don’t expect any utility based features on background color but it would be interesting to see breakdowns of how many exist.
There was also a blip of a rumor that pre-sale BALLERZ would have some additional utility. Not sure if this is still in the cards but definitely worthy of paying attention to.
The marketplace is where true diamond hands are made. Holderz separated from posers … there will be chaos, there will be blood. Make sure to research and do your due diligence. Also keep in mind that Dapper gifted back a boatload of money to TopShot users this weekend in which a portion is almost guaranteed to funnel towards the BALLERZ marketplace. Good luck and stay ballllliiiiiiinnnnnn 🏀
